New Orleans – 2005 – Hurricane Katrina
At the end of August, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The news described an abandoned populace in a flooded city. There were reports of civil disorder and overwhelmed service providers. A small group of us began the drive from Boston to New Orleans to help out where we could.
When we arrived New Orleans was in rough shape. There were plenty of signs of looting and many streets were flooded. Most people had left in the first wave of evacuations before the storm hit. Some who were trapped rode the storm out in the Superdome and the Convention Center.
By the time we arrived, the last of these groups were being relocated out of the city. The only people left on the streets were media, military and first responders. The city was eerily empty. People were still trapped in flooded neighborhoods and helicopter and rescue boat teams were busy bringing them in. Dead bodies were baking on the sidewalks, tagged for pickup when resources allowed.
We helped out where we could and left after a week or so. Slowly the water began to recede but it would be years before things returned to normal. These are some of the photos I took during this time.
